This was at the age of 43. Except for that recommendation to have a mammogram every year after 40, she would have had no reason to suspect anything was wrong in those early stages. We are delighted that after six years, she is still with us and very healthy after being successfully treated. Once this happens, whether it is exceptional or not, you don't really give a damn what the statistics are. That mammogram saved her life. When I was growing up, finding out people you knew were diagnosed with breast cancer was pretty much a death sentence for them. I'm not worried in a political kind of way, but in a way that women will avoid going through an uncomfortable, at best, procedure that could save their lives.
