Interesting that Mark Kirk is preparing for the 2010 Senate race by being more conservative relative to his district than any Republican save poor Rep Cao. Do I just have a weird reading of my state being in Chicago, or is this guy betting on red way more than advisable in IL?
I think the issue is that he fears a primary challenge. The Illinois GOP has been taken over by fundies in a lot of ways. It's been a real problem for a while ... conservatives sat on their hands when the pro-choice Topinka ran against Hot Rod, and completely non-viable candidates like Jim Oberweis end up winning primaries.
