Egypt is a better team, but just had trouble qualifying.Rashadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00533856851249002045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3401584991689197404.post-15584899024478812952010-06-11T10:19:36.610-07:002010-06-11T10:19:36.610-07:00Wow. that's a typo fail on my part. And yes, in that case I think 2nd place in the Ivy League (or one of the other mid-major ocnferences) deserves a chance in that situation.

Okay, Asia/Oceania is a little weak. But I think Costa Rica (CONCACAF playoff loser) probably deserves a finals berth more than Cristiano and the Ronaldettes or French Handball team. Likewise I bet the last team out in CONMEBOL would probably be a fine choice. Africa is harder to judge; Algeria is weak but I don't know of they qualified ahead of a team generally thought of as superior.Nick Beaudrothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02794690208464883973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3401584991689197404.post-35168226225213144132010-06-11T09:23:25.611-07:002010-06-11T09:23:25.611-07:00"But really, what is the reason that second-t..."But really, what is the reason that second-tier European nations deserve a trip to the finals over second-tier Asian, South American, North American, and African countries? It's like inviting the 9th-best team in the Big East to take a #12 seed in the NCAA tournament."

Well, it's like giving the second place team of Big Ten an automatic bid to Sweet 16 but not to the second place team of Ivy League. The second place team of Big Ten is probably much better, and more importantly, gives the organizers and broadcasters more money.

You really don't think Portugal (amongst last teams to qualify from Europe) should qualify and not Bahrain (loser of Asia-Oceania playoff)?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
