If Ezra's right about this, the pragmatic import of Harry Reid saying "We’re leaning towards talking about a public option" for good lefty folk is "Call your Senator now, especially if you live in Maine, Nevada, Montana, or Connecticut." If the public option makes it into the floor bill, there's no way they're going to be able to strip it out. But if it doesn't, it'll be very hard to put it in.
Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi is going to push forward with a public option that reimburses at 5% over Medicare rates, and use "the fiscal responsibility of the robust public option to win over enough skeptics in her caucus to pass it." I continue to be in love with a 69-year-old woman.

Me too. She's fighting for all the right things, and doing so with intelligence and heart and political savvy.
Thank God she's Speaker, rather than Steny ("I heart K Street") Hoyer.
I'm not really sure that it would make a huge ideological difference if Hoyer was Speaker -- but odds are he wouldn't be as effective. I said in August that "in comparing 1993 with 2009, I think the best thing the Democrats have going for them is Nancy Pelosi in the Speaker's chair," and I think that's going to hold up well over the next few weeks.

Did you see the video of her response to the "in her place" comment? It's awesome. when she say "I am in my place. I'm the Speaker of the House," it is just so, so cocky. Like, she just owns these idiots, and so doesn't even need to bother being insulted or offended.
I think she can pull that off because she's Italian.
